Before and After: Dining Room

A white dining room with West Elm chandelier and curtain and teal green chairs.

Nine months into living in our house, we now have one room we can confidently call mostly complete: the dining room.

Update: our dining room has evolved since this blog was written! See the latest and greatest.

The Dining Room Before

When we moved in, the dining room was yellow with a large chandelier. The curtain rod was affixed to the window frame, with dark, rainbow-colored curtains and bamboo shades mounted in the window frames.

Project Rundown

As you can see, with only one window, the dining room doesn’t get much natural light. The yellow paint and heavy curtains and fixtures didn’t help. The room always feels dark, even in the middle of the day.

Here’s what we did to change things.

  • Patched and painted the walls and ceiling. We used Behr’s Ultra White in eggshell for the entire room.
  • Removed and replaced the chandelier with a smaller, simpler, and more modern fixture.
  • Removed and replaced the existing window treatments. We wanted to make the windows look bigger and try to make the room feel as bright as possible.
  • Repainted the floor register on the floor with dark brown spray paint.
  • Removed paint from the air grate and door hinges in the entrance. The entrance to the dining room can hold French doors. Although we don’t have plans to put the French doors back up, we thought it might be nice to take the latex paint off the brass-colored hinges.
  • Removed butler door to the kitchen. It was always open anyway and the paint was chipping, so we just removed it and put it in the basement.
  • Replaced all the plastic switch plates with brass switch plates. We also re-oriented the electrical outlets to be vertically positioned instead of horizontal.

Dining Room After

Here’s what it looks like now. We still have a long way to go – the walls feel a little bare and the blue rug isn’t my favorite. But it’s a step in the right direction.

Since we painted the entire room stark white, we tried to stick with warm materials, such as brass and wood.

I also thought that the West Elm gold dust printed curtains added visual texture without being overwhelming. For those who are interested, the texture of these curtains is printed on, not embroidered. There is a double curtain rod, so we have white sheers (hand-me-downs) on the smaller rod that we can draw for a little privacy in the daytime.

We wanted the room to feel lighter and have a different color scheme. I think we achieved that, but tell us what you think. Down the road we’ll add some prints on the walls and probably splurge on a nice rug.

  1. I like elements in both but to say the second is any better , not really. Looks like a basic room with basic furnishings. At least the first look had beautiful eclectic furnishing even if the room was yellow and a little darker feeling.

    • I agree with you. We didn’t improve it – we made it a blank slate. It looks much different now: the walls are painted a dark, saturated blue and we have a lot more furnishings. It’s a far cry from the "light and airy" dining room I wrote about 3+ years ago. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Hi Katie,How do you like your West Elm Echo curtains? I’ve been looking for curtains for my new apartment — floor color and table color are similar to your "after" photo. It’s no exaggeration that I have been going nuts trying to find something that feels right. I’ve ordered and returned more curtains than I’m willing to admit when looking for ones that have colors to complement the yellow/orange glow to the wood. Anyway — I’m "giving up" on color and, it seems these are the only ones that will work with my off-white walls and lots of wood trim. Anyway — long explanation because I’m so nutty about another pair of curtains not working out, and I can’t find any customer reviews…bottom line: did you like these curtains in terms of quality? Is it really a nice gold embroidery (not beige) that catches the light? Thanks for making it to the end of the question, and your opinion would be appreciated.

    • Hi Katherine! I really like the West Elm Echo curtains however the print on them is screen printed in a gold/yellow color and it’s not gold embroidery. The print looks convincing in person and in photos, but if you want real gold/metallic embroidery, these don’t have it (I’m sorry to break the bad news!).

I also love the fabric and drape. They provide privacy but they’re quite flowy/fluid. But I bought these several years ago. West Elm has a habit of changing their products over time, so I can’t vouch for the quality of the product sell now. I will say, they are a great deal (and are currently on sale!) – you can always buy and make a return if you’re unhappy with them. I hope that helps!
